What students are served in the Gifted Program?

 A student who demonstrates a high degree of intellectual and/or creative ability(ies), exhibits an exceptionally high degree of motivation, and/or excels in specific academic fields, and who needs special instruction and/or ancillary services to achieve at levels commensurate with his or her abilities. (DOE Rule 160-4-2-.38)

 

How to Qualify for the gifted program?

Students referred for consideration of eligibility are reviewed by a committee known as the Review Team. Made up of gifted specialists, this team meets periodically throughout the year. The committee reviews existing information about each candidate. Academic grades, standardized test scores, classroom products, and information from current teachers will be reviewed to determine if the student should be considered for further testing. Upon recommendation of the Review Team, permission to gather data in the areas of creativity, motivation, achievement, and cognitive ability will be secured from the parent/guardian.

A Gifted Eligibility Team will then consider the evaluation data from two approaches to determine eligibility for gifted services. Eligibility for services will be determined through one of the following options:

Option A - Standards must be met in areas of mental/cognitive abilities and achievement as evidenced on nationally normed assessments.

Option B - Standards must be met in three of the four areas evaluated (mental/cognitive abilities, achievement, creativity, and motivation). With this option, at least one of the criteria must be met by a qualifying score on a nationally normed test.

Following an eligibility determination, parents are notified and provided the opportunity for a conference to discuss test results and determine service options.

QUEST

 Proposed Field Trips

(Pending approval from the Carroll County school board):

October 16- Stone Mountain Park (all grades)

March 2010- 4th and 5th grade students to the National Science Center for     an overnight field trip at Fort Discovery in Augusta, GA (not a set    date yet)

May 2010- 1st, 2nd, and 3rd grade students to the Georgia Aquarium for an       overnight field trip and behind the scenes tour (not a set date yet)

Curriculum

I have divided the first semester into various units for differentiated studies. In QUEST, I have students with many different learning styles and varied interests.

 

August- September: Inventors and Inventions Unit (Invent America                             Project and WebQuest)

October: Wild Things Unit (Read and study Where the Wild Things Are and                   take a Saturday field trip to view the movie in theaters in late                     October)

November: Economics Unit (Classroom money system and sale)

How does a student become eligible for gifted services?
A student must meet Georgia criteria which involves evaluation in four areas: mental ability, achievement, creativity, and motivation. For more information, see "Evaluation".

Are transfer students considered eligible for the gifted program if they were already in another gifted program at their former school?
If the student's former school is in Georgia, eligibility transfers with the student. An eligibility report should be provided by the former school.
Out-of-State students would have the opportunity to meet Georgia's criteria for gifted services.

Is my gifted child required to make up classroom work missed while participating in gifted classes?
The classroom teachers coordinate their lesson plans with the weekly gifted schedule; therefore, classroom make-up work is generally not required.

Who in my child's school should I contact for further information regarding gifted services?
Each school has a designated gifted teacher who coordinates the services and scheduling for eligible students at that school. At our School that is Mrs. Teri Donaldson formally known as Mrs. Teri Elliott.

Is there a local organization that supports gifted services?
The Carroll County Association for gifted Children is our local parent and teacher organization. Membership forms are available through your child's gifted teacher. The association provides information for parents and support for gifted classrooms. There is also a state organization called Georgia Association for Gifted Children at
www.gagc.org.

How do I recommend my child for a gifted referral ?
Contact the gifted facilitator or classroom teacher at your child's school.
